“You see, in spite of my illnesses I have found living to be a choice far superior to not living. In living, I allow myself to see the world’s beauty. I allow myself to hear the music that will raise my spirits. I allow myself to feel the warmth of a friendly embrace. I allow myself to taste the food that has been prepared with love by those who love me. I allow myself to feel the happiness that no one, no thing, no illness can take away from me. That happiness has kept me alive so far. I believe it will continue.”

Wicomico Portraits (2020)

Duration (10:00)
Concert Band

The Wicomico River is a tributary of the Potomac River. The river covers approximately 77 square miles of land spanning three counties in Southern Maryland. The name Wicomico comes from the Native American words "wicko mekee" (which loosely translates to "a place where houses are built"). Aptly named, the 13-mile river hosts many small towns and villages along its shores on both sides...

Songs on the Sea (2018)

Duration (10:00)
Concert Band

“Song on the Sea” follows the adventures of brisk, young sailors and the life on the sea. Highwind explores the loud and drunken crew, shouting in celebration and singing sea chanteys as they depart from the coast into the sea. After traveling into the fog, soft and silky voices enchant the young sailors and attempt to trap the ship among the rocks and the vessels of those who lost their way. Lastly, Warships calls the crew to combat on the sea as they engage and conquer a hostile ship in the distance.

The Graveyard Playground (2017)

Duration (10:00)
Tuba or Euphonium, Piano, and Narration

“The playground used to be full of young life but in light of recent events, it seems as if none of the kids really play here any more. Not really that anything happened at the playground specifically except maybe the occasional skirmish. But a few of the kids who spent most of their time here at this playground died over the past couple of years. Rumor has it that this playground is haunted by some of the kids that used to come here all the time… Not really haunted in a scary way because they are kids. But their spirits live here and man are they energetic. All day, All night, shenanigans would happen here and yet, the police could never find any evidence. At this point, the police reports have to say something about ghosts considering they never have any evidence to give an account.”

Two Dances for Euphonium and Piano (2016)

Duration (10:00)
Euphonium and Piano

Two Dances for Euphonium and Piano expresses the two rather diverse characters of my little sister.

A graceful and amiable character is depicted in Kim’s Waltz. From long, sweeping melodies to interplay between the piano and the euphonium, the piece creates a feeling of content… especially after the odd quirks in the music that give the piece, my sister as well, a light comical twist.

The Circus One Step, however, shows a completely unpredictable and adventurous character with quite the colorful imagination. With her short attention span and her interesting ideas, the constantly shifting tonality or the interesting resolutions act accordingly. The form gives a little bit of predictability but even then, you never get what you expect the first time around… or the second.

When Autumn Leaves Fall (2014)

Duration (16:00)
Euphonium and Chamber Orchestra

When Autumn Leaves Fall is a reflection on the lives of those whom we have lost. Beginning with a gentle reminiscence of the memories shared, the pain of permanent separation from their physical presence begin to settle. With time, the pain develops and proportionally, the memories begin to drown in the depths of the pain. Smiles reappear as the latter stages of confrontation begin. The better and the worse of the memories revisited are subject to our imaginations to relive and to be reminded of the lessons we once learned. In moving forward from grief, the last few tears are the final acceptance of the separation. However, after the tears are wiped away, the lessons learned and the memories relived linger to forever provide hope and wisdom to all future decisions as “soil to the seed. Nothing more, but nothing less, than pieces of the ground.”.
